Edmonton May 29 The Alberta government declined to accept Sir Thomas Tait's proposals for developing the McMurray salt deposits. The Premier stated the province cannot grant total royalty exemption or municipal tax immunity and would limit rights to the McMurray salt area under provincial control.

New Gas Tax Set to Rise and Take Effect

Edmonton notes the gasoline tax increase from three to five cents under the jyasotine gax act of 1929. The act designates gasoline and oil companies as government agents for collection starting June 1, with Edmund Trowbridge overseeing implementation. Penalties apply for unpaid tax and inspectors may search premises without warrant. a four cent refund is provided for specified industrial gasoline use.

A rock slide near Burwash station twenty miles south of Sudbury derailed an engine and baggage car of Canadian Pacific Railway train No. 27 westbound early today. Passenger W. L. Cochrane of MacTier Ont. suffered a broken leg. No other injuries reported.

Farmers Win Appeal Against Assessment Of Saskatchewan Wheat Producers

The Exchequer Court ruled in favor of the Saskatchewan Wheat Producers Limited in appeals of 1925 and 1926 assessments by the Minister of National Revenue amounting to 154 143 and 302 489 61 dollars. The court said deductions for elevators and reserves were temporary loans from farmers to the Pool and not gains or profits under the Act.

Canadian Railways Cut Wheat Flour Export Rates

Montreal May 29 A 3.33 cent per hundred pounds cut in export wheat flour freight rates from Georgian Bay ports to Montreal Saint John and Halifax was announced by Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railways. The new rate to Montreal drops from 17.60 to 14.17 cents per hundred pounds and takes effect today through September. The action mirrors a U S rate cut and follows Interstate Commerce Commission authorization for similar reductions by Canadian lines.
