In Harbin on May 29 soldiers along the Chinese Eastern railroad mutinied and supported Gen. Wu Pei Fu after his victory over Chang Tso Lin. The revolt leaves Pekin under Wu Pei Fu’s influence as calls grow for a provisional presidency and a permanent constitution.
Wireless advices say Wu Pei Fu’s forces push north toward Manchurian territory with possible advance on Mukden. In Pekin the government warns of a financial crisis needing five million dollars by the first of the month as current expenses cannot be met.
Moscow reports the Soviet government launches a unity loan valued at 10 million poods of rye with a fixed currency rate of four million roubles per pood. Subscriptions are accepted in currency. loan redeemable at par in December and January with grain payments. The move aims to fund summer needs and withdraw currency from circulation during harvest.
In White Plains on May 29 police opened a search for a mysterious woman said to offer $500 to a youth to kill a person in the Ward home New Rochelle. The case centers on Walter S Ward who says a black mail ring squeezed $30000 from him and led to the Ward murder of Clar ence Peters. Authorities check a Broadway restaurant tale and seek the black clad woman who lured the youth to the scene.
Ottawa May 29. Prime Minister W L Mackenzie King announced in the house of commons that the Dominion Government does not consider the present time opportune for negotiating a treaty with the United States on the St Lawrence waterway scheme.
