Paris May 29 General Foch holds the situation well in hand and French troops begin to gain on German advanced forces in a test of speed. German drive may be stopped within 48 hours as reserves enter the fighting line. Allies hold flanks with exceptional courage and heavy odds against them.
Allied action reports indicate American forces repelled a three pronged German raid on the Picardy line. A fierce counterattack pushed the attackers back to their first line, with American troops advancing to seize parts of the enemy position before being ordered to halt.
Copenhagen dispatch says Berlin critics admit surprise at the Chemin des Dainog choice for a western front offensive. They claim Entente commanders were also startled and note exhausted English divisions shifted to Champagne to rest. German papers report alleged British and French prisoners confessing total surprise.
Hedley Shaw Milling Company plans a four to five month expansion this summer, adding a three story structure with part rising to six stories. He notes a 190,000 strong army on the German frontier, widespread hunger, and strong anti German sentiment resisting German control.
City workers began a new cinder pathway project starting at Sixth Avenue near St Patrick's church and climbing to Fifth Avenue at hilltop. The route, with a gentle grade of around four percent, will improve access for Crescent Heights residents and bring them closer to the rest of the city.
