Reports from Rimouski after dawn reveal 700 to 1,000 feared dead when the Empress of Ireland sank in the St Lawrence after a collision with the Storstad. Of 1,437 aboard, 399 were rescued. lifeboats filled with survivors from cabins amid chaos, many maimed or naked, while Salvation Army members traveling to London suffered heavy losses.
Revised roster details survivors rescued by the C. G. S. Eureka after an incident near Rimouski on May 29. It names passengers including Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Tylee of Montreal, Mrs. W. E. Paton of Sherbrooke, and many others plus crew led by Captain H. G. Kendall. The list also extends to steerage and Salvation Army members aboard, with names from Montreal, London, Winnipeg, and other cities.
