The Canadian Press reports a June 9 Ontario election will feature a record 472 candidates, surpassing 1975 levels. PCs, NDP, and Liberals field 125 candidates each. 33 Communists and 6 Social Creditors join, with 52 independents or minor party reps.
After four days of fear 105 Dutch children and a teacher were released from a Bovensmilde village school while a separate group held 55 hostages on a train near Assen. Police said six captives remained aboard. the government sought a peaceful resolution as a jet-hijacker demand loomed.
Three anti terrorist police officers admitted guilt for not obtaining a search warrant before raiding the Agence Presse Libre offices in October 1972. Sentencing set for June 9. maximum two years in prison plus possible disciplinary actions.
Prime Minister Trudeau insisted ministers and senior RCMP officials were not involved in any cover-up of the 1972 police raid on a Montreal Quebec news agency office. RCMP Chief Supt Donald Cobb pleaded guilty in Montreal to the break-in along with local officers. Solicitor General Fox said Cobb was reprimanded and called the raid a misjudgment by the force.

A Soviet Aeroflot Ilyushin 62 M jet on Flight SU 331 crashed during an emergency landing at Havana airport from Europe. 53 of 55 aboard were killed according to a Canadian embassy official. The aircraft reportedly had one engine on fire and crashed about 300 yards from the runway. The cause remains undetermined.
The government unveiled a green paper on dismantling controls proposing a consultative forum with public interest representatives including business labor farmers fishermen consumers and professionals to advise on the economy. It would join a monitoring agency for wage and price checks and timing decisions could be announced by midsummer.
The National Energy Board warns of declining reserves and growing imports by the early 1980s with heavy reliance on crude from unstable regions. He backed a statutory grain shipping rate to the West Coast amid Commons debate on the Hall report and its costs shifting to users. Diefenbaker and Hamilton pressed for clear stance on Crowsnest rates, while Alberta's Hargrave urged subsidies for value added products and farm beneficiaries.
