U S Forces Break Up Tank Assault on Kontum
AP report from Saigon says electronically guided missiles helped halt a tank assault on Kontum City in the central highlands with about a dozen tanks destroyed. On the My Chanh line north of Hue, South Vietnamese Marines repelled a fourth assault this week as 192 North Vietnamese troops were claimed killed with 7 South Vietnamese dead and 34 wounded. 12 miles southwest of Hue, Fire Base Checkmate was reoccupied with 31 North Vietnamese reported killed. Air campaigns targeted Haiphong area as bridges north of the city were destroyed in ongoing efforts to isolate the port.
