Hawaiian Youth Escapes Jail Then Is Shot by Police
Vernon Blackie Campbell, a 98 year old Hawaiian, broke from Oakalla prison farm near Burnaby with Gordon Fawcett on April 4. He was recaptured in South Tacoma Park after a dawn pursuit by four officers. Six bullets struck him during the ensuing gun battle as he led officers on an 80 mile per hour ride from Tacoma. He had earlier robbed a department store clerk, and investigators say inside help aided the escape via an elevator shaft used as an execution chamber. Campbell had pleaded guilty to robbery with violence in Vancouver Far Assizes last year and was awaiting sentence.

Local pilot killed in Manitoba barnstorming crash
A Brisbane Aviation Company biplane from High River crashed at North Battleford at about 5 45 PM killing passenger Charles Dube and pilot Frederick Russenberg. Russenberg, a Medicine Hat native and noted daredevil flyer, had been teaching and building planes in Lethbridge and Hat prior to the barnstorming tour. His family, including widow and two daughters, survived the accident. Police and RCMP opened an investigation into the cause.
