An American steamer torpedoed today as Italy celebrates victories along the Austrian border. Italian troops are pouring across the frontier at every point and have reportedly seized several strategic positions in the mountains. News confirms bold advances and heightened Allied pressure on Austrian defenses.
Rome reports Italian invasion extended along the Austro Hungarian frontier with towns seized and defiles crossed. Austrian withdrawal scorched earth tactics cited as bridges destroyed. In Galicia, Gen MacKenen presses north of Przemysl while Petrograd notes no clear gains for Austro German forces. Western front sees Belgian retreats and French actions near Arras with localized fighting around Lorette and Givenchy. Italian blockade of Austro Hungarian ports announced. experts cite Ypres as proof of British superiority.
Ottawa May 26 Western Canada mayors delivered a memorandum to the Premier urging open agricultural lands to settlers, early start on public works, highway coordination, creation of industrial exchanges for unemployed workers, and immigration policies favoring agricultural roles. They cited 33,000 unemployed across prairies and Ontario and noted European immigrant trends. The Prime Minister voiced sympathy but emphasized constrained expenditures and prior commitments, while noting potential provincial highway aid and limited immigration.
Ottawa May 36. British Labour member C W Barnes and W Wyndham of the Board of Trade told the mayors congress 30 000 skilled laborers are needed for Great Britain munition factories. Men to handle metal lathe work assemble parts and join components. Travel expenses to Britain paid and repaid after six months. Wages highest in the destination district. Workers to be used on government contracts. Barnes and Wyndham to seek government permission to draw men from Canada.
Indian Chief Sunchild and Cree band from Montana in Carlstadt predicted seventeen days of rain in June after accurately forecasting a rainless May starting May 13. In Carlstadt Alta May 25 a citizens committee meeting gathered to select a new village name from submissions. Alliance was the top choice with Sheldon and Alderson as runners up. A public vote approved the list 22 to 13 and George Beattie was tasked to draft petitions to Ottawa for official name change.
The American steamer Nebraskan, capt. Green, en route from Liverpool to Delaware Breakwater, was torpedoed about forty miles west-southwest of Fastnet off the south coast of Ireland. No lives lost. the ship sustained non-critical damage, and all crew returned to work after taking to boats and then returning aboard. The incident was reported to the British Admiralty and American embassy via wireless. The Nebraskan is 2,824 tons net, owned by American-Hawaiian S.S. Co. of New York.
The steamer Ryndam of the Holland American Line bound from New York to Rotterdam collided with the freight steamer Joseph J. Cuneo off Nantucket Island. Ryndam transferred passengers and part of crew to the Cuneo. both ships damaged. hold No 5 flooded. engine room leaking. 160 of 200 crew aboard Cuneo. battleship South Carolina assisting.
A wireless message to Health Officer O Connell reports the British steamer Dews, captained by Evans and sailing from Ciennfuegos with sugar, has twenty five beriberi cases among its forty crew and eight deaths since leaving port.
