An Angus Reid telephone survey of 800 Albertans conducted April 20 to 29 finds 50 per cent oppose and 45 per cent support the governments education overhaul. Voters are also split on tax powers for local boards, with 44 per cent in favor and 48 per cent opposed. The poll was paid for by six education groups including the Alberta School Boards Association and the Alberta Teachers Association.
British doctors report possible nine deaths from a virulent streptococcus A form, urging calm after sensational coverage. Officials note about 10 annual deaths normally occur and emphasize coordinated checks while dismissing scaremongering. Canadian climbers John McIsaac and Denis Brown faltered near the Everest summit. With 350 metres to go for McIsaac and after about four hours in the final leg for Brown, they turned back exhausted. They face a dangerous descent to the 8,200 metre camp amid deep snow and 35 C heat.
Alberta through the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission argues the province holds exclusive constitutional rights over natural resources and that federal environmental review should be narrow when the resource is provincially owned. The brief cites the Oldman Dam decision to urge limits on federal involvement in provincial regulatory matters.
