Abortion bill saved by lone Tory MP

In Ottawa the Mulroney government barely survived debate on Bill C 48 as Joy Langan Campbell of the NDP failed to get traction without the lone Conservative MP present. Quebec Tory Andre Plourde voted no stalling the plan to adjourn. The bill would allow abortion if a doctor believes the pregnancy endangers the mother’s health.

Refinery Explosion Kills One at Petro-Canada Plant

A Petro-Canada refinery fire on Refinery Row near Edmonton shattered homes and sent flames into the air. One worker died while two others suffered critical burns of 65 and 45 percent respectively as several staff were treated at the scene. University of Alberta Hospitals officials said the injured remain in burn units. The blast occurred in the gasoline processing area and was described as thunder like by witnesses.
