In six months Canadian sugar prices nearly doubled from 6.40 to 17.50 per 100 pounds at Montreal refineries. Officials cite supply and demand as world beet harvest and Cuba production shrink, pushing wholesale prices higher while consumption grows. If global supply improves, prices may ease.
A rush of sell orders pushed United States and world sugar futures down the maximum daily limit of 50 cents per 100 pounds on the New York market. Brokers cited profit taking, congressional investigations, and reports that the United States had bought most of its quota as reasons for the decline. The London market mirrored the drop after a prior boom driven by a global sugar shortage.
Douglas John Brown 35, wanted by Vancouver police for a Loomis Armored Car theft, returned from Rio de Janeiro to New York Idlewild Airport with an Interpol officer. He used the alias Smith and faced no questions as reporters were kept away. arrangements for transfer to Vancouver were unclear. Over $500,000 stolen, about $325,000 still missing.
Rev G G Taylor will conduct the funeral Monday at 2 p.m. from Cook’s Funeral Chapel for Frederick William Slack of 151 Mitchell Crescent. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Slack died suddenly Thursday night at 41. Born and raised in Medicine Hat he ran a dental mechanic shop. Survived by wife Irene, three daughters Barbara Lynn Ann Carry Sue, two brothers Dr Ted Slack and Howard, sister Marion, mother Hazel Slack.
Civic finance committee urges City Council to study natural gas rate structure before examining 1963 mill rate and departmental estimates. Monday special meeting, open to public, will review classifications including domestic and industrial and set the mill rate. The city owns the gas service and claims to have the lowest rates in North America.
In Ottawa east Sandy Hill residents, after calling police, arrested Alderman Charlie St. Germain and Mayor Charlotte Whitton during a park check to verify complaints about nocturnal car parkers in Strathcona Park. The incident occurred after a civic meeting as part of efforts to curb late night activity.
The Commons will revisit nuclear warheads policy as Prime Minister Pearson pushes for a defence committee. The Liberal government plans interim supply votes and priority legislation on an economic council of Canada, a new department of industry, and a second agriculture minister. Conservative critic Fairweather denounces the nuclear policy stance as inadequate for first class power status.
Deputy Attorney General Gilbert Kennedy denounced the removal of robbery suspect Douglas John Brown from Rio de Janeiro as shocking and said British Columbia had no role. They cited concerns over Soviet forces in Cuba and threats to West Berlin while pledging unity on the 1958 pledge to defend freedom and security in Europe.
Sixteen year old Caryl Beach of Medicine Hat won the District 13 Oratorical Contest in Calgary, sponsored by Optimist International. Bishop Francis P. Carroll blessed the new St Mary's Church in Redcliff. Jorn Carney was elected president of the Council of Social Services in Medicine Hat. Ken Biddell, 33, of Medicine Hat, was nominated as Progressive Conservative candidate for the upcoming provincial election.
The death of 12 year old Dennis Frank Fox occurred early this morning in Medicine Hat. Born in Brooks on April 13 1951 he moved to Medicine Hat as a baby and lived there until death. He attended Central Park and Connaught schools played Tiny Mite hockey and Little League ball and was a second star Cub with Westminster Cub Pack. Surviving are his parents three brothers one sister and grandparents. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Pattison's Funeral Home.
