Calgary logged a city record of 183 consecutive fatality free days in traffic. The streak ended when Trevor Rathgaber, 2, was struck by a milk truck and died two hours later in hospital, marking Calgary's first fatality of 1957 after 183 days.
The president of the Royal Automobile Club of Canada urged government action to organize provincial accident prevention bureaus as the best way to stop rising traffic toll. Douglas G. Macpherson of Montreal called for coordinated action among governments, public bodies, and individuals, listing 16 departments to involve. He cited provincial motor-vehicle tax revenues over 500 million dollars and stressed fact finding through careful research.

The Welsh escapee William Foxy Fowler, 33, who escaped from Dartmoor May 14, eludes a 10 day manhunt across Britain. Police, dogs, and walkers chase as Fowler displays ingenuity and sportsmanship, drawing cautious admiration despite crimes of burglary and weapon possession.
Prime Minister St Laurent and John Diefenbaker continued the cross country exchange over funding federal services and tax cuts. St Laurent accused Diefenbaker of extravagant promises while Diefenbaker argued social benefits could rise from a surplus and taxes fall. Coldwell criticized Social Credit in Edmonton and Low pressed northern Alberta campaigning.
Arthur Miller's The Crucible drew harsh criticism from a British adjudicator and lukewarm audience reaction at the Dominion Drama Festival in Edmonton. Robert Speaight called the production "grim" and "average," faulting actors for unnatural high pitches and strained voices.
