New 27th Brigade Formed With Canadian Leaders Named

Brig Geoffrey Walsh named to command Canada’s new 27th Brigade group with headquarters at Valcartier Quebec. Lt Col John Mahony VC named to lead the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion. Lt Col Rutherford 1st Canadian Highland Battalion. Lt Col Cutbill 1st Canadian Rifle Battalion. The brigade aims for 5,500 men and support for Eisenhower’s Atlantic Pact army in Europe.

Collision toll rises to twelve in French trawler wreck

Reports say twelve people died in yesterday’s foggy collision between two French fishing trawlers off Grangs Banks. Other items note Allied shipping pooling plans, Swedish mine collapse trapping miners, atomic tests at Eniwetok, King’s influenza, Mount Royal tuition rise, and a bomb threat in Dublin.

HALIFAX CP The French fisheries patrol vessel L Aventure en route to St Johns Nfld with unknown survivors from a collision yesterday between two French trawlers on the Grand Banks. The death toll is expected to be high with two known dead and 10 missing reported and the exact circumstances unclear. The Ginette Le Borgne and Jacques Coeur collided in fog about 150 miles southeast of Cape Race in a busy fishing area.

Dead young Canadian runner after starting gun blast

Paul Vamplew, 17, one of Canada's rising middle distance stars, died after a blank cartridge fired from a revolver held by coach Lloyd Percival discharged at Pantry Park in Toronto. Autopsy showed heart rupture caused fatal hemorrhage from the blast.

Pension Conference Reaches General Agreement On Old Age Aid

Ottawa reports a two day federal provincial conference ended with general agreement to draft legislation for an enlarged old age pension program. Expect Grasshoppers To Jump in June

Hordes of grasshoppers will invade prairie grain fields in days marking the start of a summer long feast on farmers incomes. Poison will be spread as bait or sprayed to halt the hatch of eggs laid last fall. Hatching is expected to be general in Saskatchewan and Manitoba by month end and in Alberta during the first week of June, with hot weather accelerating the process.

Canadians Celebrate Victoria Day In Traditional Style

Canadians marked Victoria Day with fireworks and outdoor leisure across central Canada while rain dampened Maritimes and Pacific coast. New British Oil Refineries Will Ease Dollar Problems

The 37.5 million pound project by Anglo American Esso will produce 1 000 000 gallons of gasoline daily and supply 25 percent of UK refined output.
