Election officials began counting Belfast votes for the Northern Irish Parliament as heavy turnout and street unrest continued. Sentries warned crowds after 11 pm as both nationalist and unionist claim widespread intimidation and personation in Ulster polls.
Brantford Ontario May 25 At the Ontario command of the Great War Veterans Association annual convention a resolution asks the Dominion Government to grant a cent a mile fare for unemployed veterans and their families on their way to employment with children seven years old free. The proposal would continue until economic depression ends.
Paris May 25. France must borrow 32 billion francs to cover expenditures this year, said Mr. Oberon of the Finance Committee in the Senate. He warned of a difficult but not impossible situation and urged clear fulfillment of obligations and proper efforts.
The First Mounted Rifles will train in a nine day camp here from June 15 to June 23. Capt. G F Price reports from Col. Spry that Col. Spry and Col. Pearkes will arrive tomorrow to finalize plans. About 150 district men, including C squadron from Chinook under Major Ridout, will be quartered at exhibition grounds buildings.
Madison report May 24 says Leslie Matts was bitten on the hand by a tarantula hiding in bananas just arrived. He is hospitalized under treatment for what is considered a deadly bite in South America. The spider, described as several inches in diameter, was killed by coworkers.
A compilation of Alberta ranchers from Pine Tree to High River lists names and current statuses. Many are deceased, retired, or living in other provinces or countries, with several unidentified figures still sought by The News.
May 25 Alexandria reports desultory firing after riotous disturbances that left about 0 dead, including 12 Europeans, and nearly 200 wounded. Looters and skulkers blamed for the unrest. London notes a Cairo to Alexandria telephone line cut and no news from Alexandria amid rumors.
Townsend Montana May 24 An elderly sheep herder employed by the J A Graw ley company in Deep Creek country was killed by a cloudburst in a canyon this week. His name is not known. His body lay beneath an overturned camp wagon pinned by the vehicle. It is assumed wind prior to the rain tipped the wagon and left him to die, possibly by drowning after hours.
Ottawa May 26 Can. Press The Manufacturers Association has chartered the Canada Steamship Lines steamer Saguenay for a three day convention starting June 7. R W Gould secretary of the Montreal branch said the ship will serve as a hotel boat at the docks to accommodate overflow delegates from the Chateau.
Chicago on May 24 reports H. A. Swart, a nine year patient at a home for incurables, wheeled eight blocks to Lake Michigan shore and died by suicide by drowning.
President Harding urged no more war while reviewing World War I survivors in Brooklyn and attending a memorial for 5 000 dead on Hoboken piers. He spoke of government on a business basis at a New York luncheon and dinner, moving listeners at the military events.
London reports that the German government notified France it will supply food and money to Upper Silesia. The move aims to aid the region amid distress and could influence relief efforts across the border.
Reports from Moscow say peasants will not sell corn, fearing famine as government food plans fail. Decrees freeing trade do not ease shortages. commissions fail to buy grain and prices soar. Officials in Moscow and Petrograd restrict state supplies, while workers flee the city for food.
Mr W H Tom receives four pounds of seed corn from Mr W H Sanders of Excelsior Canning Co Exeter Ont. Sanders recommends planting four to five kernels per hill three feet apart and thinning to three stalks when six inches tall. Tom distributes samples to testers while Sanders explores canning factory suitability and notes interest in Hatfield's rain making.
In Buenos Ayres on May 25 two workers were killed and several wounded in clashes between union and non-union port workers. Two riots broke out with pistol use and numerous brawls as unions and non-unionists fought with fists.
A discharged British soldier, with 56 dollars in his pocket, was found wandering in the woods near Woodbridge Ontario. He arrived in Toronto with memory loss and severe hunger and was admitted to a military hospital after being handed to the 8th S. C. R. authorities.
Two citizens were fined the costs of the court after driving autos over a fire hose while firefighters watered the streets this morning.
May 25 report from Constantinople says a British naval official dispatched a warship to Adalia to pressure for the release of prisoners removed from the British steamer F catin held by Turkish authorities.
