Senate and Commons Endorse Expensive Supplementary Estimates

Ottawa May 20. Both houses met to wrap up the session with bills dispatched and progress shown. The Commons approved railway subsidy resolutions totaling 3 462 000 and Finance minister tabbed 1 240 476 in further supplementary estimates. Total next year’s outlay reaches sixty million. New items include 100 000 for census, 25 000 for North-West schools, and 510 000 for the Plains of Abraham purchase. Indemnity for senators and members rises from 1000 to 1500 starting this session. premier to announce the move Monday.

The Salvation Army marks its annual Self Denial fund drive from May 26 to June 1. The effort, begun thirteen years ago to aid the Forden Fund in London, has raised large sums worldwide and involves giving up luxuries to support Army work and moral lessons.

Death of Mr. G. E. Nugent in Qu Appelle crossing tragedy

Mr. G E Nugent of Wapella drowned early Tuesday while crossing the Qu Appelle in the valley near Hazelcliffe. His wagon and horses plunged into water. Nugent perished while releasing the team. Winning swam for help and Nugent's body was recovered about twenty feet from where he sank. Nugent, a prominent eastern Assiniboia merchant with stores in Wapella Hazelcliffe and Esthaz, was mourned by a wide circle. Funeral services were held with Moosomin Odd Fellows in charge.

British Cattle Markets Trade Notes From Glasgow and Europe

Cable advices from Glasgow say Canadian and American cattle prices firm with demand in the western market active. Choice cattle fetch 4.90 to 5.25 in Canada, while London reports cattle prices advancing with States at 12 to 12¼ pence and Canadians at 13½ to 12¾ pence. Liverpool notes weaker cattle at 103 to 4d, with sheep and lambs steady to firmer and refrigerator beef at 8½ to 9d.

At a Tuesday meeting Mayor Finlay and Councillors Lune Penhale and Yuill were present with Town Solicitor Mitchell. The town contract offers CPR water at 5 cents per 1000 gallons with a minimum and maximum daily quantity, connections to North and South Railway Streets, weekly meter readings, free water for fires, and a three year term. Mayor Finlay and Mitchell were appointed to draft the contract and present it to CPR engineer Mr. Busteed.
