Emu couple captured after 30 hour escape in Welland

A federally commissioned report says underfunding and attitudes keep many children with low paid unregulated caregivers. It calls for national minimum standards, more training and wages, and views child care as skilled work. Springfield high ambush kills student as shooter is stopped

A 15 year old student Kipland P Kinkel opened fire in Thurston High cafeteria injuring eight and killing a classmate Mikael Nickolau son 17. A wrestler Jake Ryker tackled Kinkel and disarmed him. Police later found two bodies at Kinkel's home identified as his parents.

Albertans complain of longer hours and lower pay

A labor group says Alberta workers are facing longer hours and reduced pay. Audrey Cormack of the Alberta Federation of Labor notes many young people hold low paying or temporary jobs and more workers are unpaid overtime. The share working under 30 hours per week rose from 13.6% in 1981 to 17.2% in 1996.
