In Vancouver the CBC strike remains mostly on as talks stalled. B C Federation of Labor officials say they will coordinate with other unions to ensure respect for picket lines across the province.
Saskatchewan and Manitoba Alberta oppose Ontario calls for new resource revenue sharing. Ed Tchorzewski says Saskatchewan will only consider a new oil profits pool if Ottawa raises prices and eliminates direct oilfield taxes. Alberta and Manitoba similarly reject unconditional sharing, urging funds be used for investment rather than subsidies.
Ottawa Reuters report notes the government survived a Commons confidence vote on economic policy as Bank of Canada rates rose to 19.06 percent. Prime Minister Trudeau defended gradualism while opponents urged bank social responsibility and action to ease high credit costs.
London AP reports truck driver Peter Sutcliffe known as the Yorkshire Ripper was found guilty of murder by a mixed jury, rejecting his insanity plea. The verdict follows earlier coverage and details appear on page 11.
The Medicine Hat Health Unit indefinitely delays its eight year spring and summer preschool screening program for ages three to four percent, citing provincial staff shortages and rapid population growth. Dr. Ken Clementi calls the move a disgraceful setback, noting nurse shortages and low provincial support threaten early detection of health and developmental issues.
Former Alberta attorney-general Jim Foster suggests the province may establish its own police force to handle much RCMP work. Ex‑Liberal cabinet minister Jack Horner, once Crowfoot MP, urged Albertans to consider Confederation logic.
Alberta Energy Minister Merv Leitch said a ministerial meeting with federal Energy Minister Marc Lalonde is unlikely before June. He noted talks are ongoing between departments and a June meeting is possible. Leitch also confirmed a planned five per cent oil production cut from June 1 and Sept. 1, totaling 180000 barrels, to pressure higher prices. ESSO’s Cold Lake heavy oil project deadline remains July 1 for an agreement, else development plans could be shelved.
Ottawa reports gas producers and sponsors of the Alaska High Way natural gas pipeline have agreed to a financing plan that could enable construction. Senator Bud Olson said the package covers northern pipeline sections and a gas conditioning plant in Alaska. The project cost has risen to over 30 billion dollars from 23 billion last summer.
NDP leader Ed Broadbent ships out on a fact finding tour for the Socialist International to seek a negotiated peace in El Salvador and to bolster his leadership amid a likely July national meeting. If security holds, the mission could extend to Mexico Nicaragua or Cuba as 104 aides and reporters travel with him.
