Dr Thomas Childs federal veterinary director general says Canada may be free of foot and mouth disease by late July. He notes no current cases, inspections exceeding 1,000,000 cattle since Feb 18, and quarantine areas under close review as the U S may lift its embargo on Canadian cattle this fall.
Gen. James A. Van Fleet said 80,000 communist captives on Koje Island will soon be under complete control within their compounds. He noted the camp’s new commander Brig. Gen. Haydon L. Boatner is restoring security after a May 7 seizure by Reds led to no entry for camp personnel. He praised U S infantry for handling the nearby Pusan riot with concussion grenades.
In Montreal two clergymen were elected to the Canadian Legion’s top two offices. Dr C B Lumsden of Wolfville Nova Scotia, a one armed WWII veteran and Bible teacher, becomes president after serving as a stretcher bearer and Military Medal recipient. Dean J C Anderson of Winnipeg, a 39 year old Anglican clergyman awarded the Victoria Cross in 1945, is named first vice president.
Four gold bricks valued at about 110000 disappeared from a vault at East Malartic Mines Ltd in Malartic Quebec between midnight and 9 am. Police alerted across northwestern Quebec and northern Ontario as mine officials call it the largest gold theft on record since 1922.
A woman, Mrs Mark McAuley, is in critical condition after chest and abdomen wounds from a stabbing in Edmonton. Wayne Stevens is treated for a back wound. Lionel Cadieux is arrested in a separate stabbing of Leo Berend. Police recovered a blood stained knife and clothing. The Mazurka note at end is unrelated.
Union management reach a binding memorandum with three rail unions totaling 150 000 members ending a three year dispute. The accord includes wage boosts back pay totaling 100 million dollars and cost of living adjustments. It sets groundwork for yard worker 40 hour weeks and allows unions to block certain interdivisional train crews while negotiations continue.
Gavin McCullough, 52, was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the death of his seven year old foster daughter Martha Louise. He was ordered held in Headingley until the lieutenant governor’s pleasure is known. McCullough’s wife Lillian, 52, was declared insane and will not face trial. Police found the child’s body as neighbors describe the couple praying in nightclothes in a snow cold yard. Four psychiatrists testified McCullough was insane at the time of the act.
The Canadian Legion at its five day Montreal convention voted to replace the term conscription with selective service and urged peacetime compulsory service for reserves and regular forces if war comes. Quebec opposed the word conscription but supported readiness measures and a royal commission inquiry into reserve force absorption.
Buckingham Palace issued a swift reply after Prince Charles misplaced his pet rabbit. A green hutch with the white rabbit was retrieved from Clarence House and carried away by palace staff amid a flurry of state activity.

Archaeologists in Aarhus examined a well preserved 2000 year old iron age corpse from a peat swamp in central Jutland. The post mortem indicated the man likely died from injuries after a sacrifice to a fertility goddess, with doctors noting a diseased liver and remarkable preservation of hair, nails and fingerprints.
U N officers eye a suspected Soviet buildup in Asia amid Cold War tensions. They warn Russia could enter Korea if needed, while noting no current plan beyond arming Chinese and North Korean forces. Ridgway and Clark stress growing enemy strength, with large troop numbers, air power, and fortified positions in Korea and Manchuria.
General Ridgway told Congress that Communist germ and gas war fare charges against the United Nations in Korea are a monumental warning, though he called the charges false in their entirety.
