Italy and Germany Sign Mutual Military Pact

Berlin May 22 Germany and Italy signed a seven article pact to pool military and economic resources if either enters a war. The agreement aims to deepen mutual military and economic ties and allow rapid coordinated action. The Rome based writer Virgino Gayda reported secret clauses in the pact.

Veteran John Dempster to wear rare Zulu War medal

An 84-year-old Medicine Hat resident, John Dempster, will wear an active service medal for his Zulu War role when he and other veterans meet the King and Queen in Medicine Hat on May 26. Born May 9, 1857, in Ballymena, he enlisted in 1876, served in the 57th then 77th Regiments, and later settled in Canada. He and Agnes Rainey married in Rangoon in 1881, emigrated to Belfast, then moved to Medicine Hat in 1906 before retiring there in 1933.
