Sir Ian Hamilton reports Australians killed about seven thousand Turkish troops at the Dardanelles in retaliation for Brig. Gen. Bridges death. Despite allied successes, Krithia and Kodajevo remain under Turkish control as Britain forms a new cabinet over Whitsuntide.
A Geneva telegram reports Baron Barian Van Rajees resigning as Austro Hungarian premier, though Emperor Francis Joseph may not accept. Reports from Rotterdam describe British prisoners abused at Louvain, with several shot when escaping guards looked away. Paris notes Austrians retreating in Bukowina toward the Carpathians and Italy potentially declaring casus belli by destroying bridges. Rome witnesses Capritoline hill ceremony for wartime mobilization and German ambassador Von Buelow remaining in Rome. Swiss authorities pledge to represent Italian interests in Germany if war breaks out.
London reports Serbia's reconstituted army marches toward the Austrian border bent on another invasion as Italy joins the war. Austria faces threats from multiple fronts with Roumania, Greece, and Bulgaria poised to join the allies while Russia sustains a strong offensive in Poland and Galicia, delaying German advances around Przemysl.
Two Medicine Hut men from Ottawa are among the missing after the LangeMarck battle. Edward Morris and D J Vincent are named as missing with ties to Hewitt and Black and Revelstoke Sawmill Co. Clarification notes suggest a possible misprint of Simmonds from Vancouver and a London England origin. Ottawa casualty lists also mention the Second Canadian Contingent with the 28th and 8th Battalions in the firing line.
Petrograd reports heavy artillery and widespread bombardment along the San river north of Przemysl. Germans mass 4000 field guns in a short front, shelling the area for four days and pushing 25 miles along the right bank while Austro German forces maneuver to encircle the fortress. The Przemysl fortress, retaken by Russians, is believed able to endure a long siege.
The Monereh Monday program features a big four act comedy titled C. O. D. The venue promises a lively slate of laughs and strong ensemble performances across the evening.
London reports slow progress forming a new national cabinet with Lloyd George to remain chancellor and Lloyd George name repeated. Lansdowne to join. Balfour to be First Lord of the Admiralty. Birrell to stay as chief secretary for Ireland. Carson to enter the cabinet. Also three trespassers on the CPR were each fined thirty days by Inspector Shoebotham.
The Medicine Hat Garage announced in yesterday's News that a carload of Ford autos had been received. Mr Drake says he sold three cars before night. Purchasers said they saw the advertisement in the News, and the paper is read by everyone.
Colonel H M Elliott assistant Adjutant-General of the Toronto military division and likely the most popular officer there will assume command of the 8,000 soldier camp at Sewell Manitoba. He is an Imperial officer loaned to the Canadian Government by British authorities and has been in Toronto since 1918. He led the organisation and administration of Exhibition camp where 8,000 soldiers of the second contingent trained this winter.
Sir Wilfrid Laurier spoke at the Liberal Club Federation of Ontario meeting in Toronto. He urged cooperation with the government during the war and warned against a mid war election, citing coalition examples in Britain and unity in France. Delegates from 64 clubs were reported, with Dr Hugh Spohn and Hugh McLaughlin among officials, and Dr G Conant elected president.
Private Jim Goodall, ex-captain of Mooge, is in Cardiff hospital with a bullet wound to his left shoulder. He longs to take up arms again and stop the Germans, writing of his desire in a letter to W Lockett. His brother serves, his sister nurses, and another brother was lost on H M S Bulwark.
Montreal reports Major J N Warmington vice president of the Montreal AAA and a renowned Canadian sportsman has been killed in action this morning after a private cable arrived announcing the death.
John D. Larkin millionaire soap maker heads to Queens to organize a search for his brother in law Elbert Hubbard. The move follows disclosures made at a spiritualist seance as investigators seek the missing Hubbard.
The Messaggero reports the council of ministers will meet after the senate, likely drafting a declaration of war against Austria Hungary. O. W. Kealy has not yet been taken to Lethbridge to serve his two year term and may be taken up tonight. with Mounted Police barracks full he temporarily heads the city police. Big Children's Matinee at the Monarch Monday.
At Gretna near Carlisle three trains collided at 6 am on the Caledonian line. A troop train local and London to Glasgow express were involved. Fire followed, many dead or dying soldiers among the wounded. Doctors worked amid flames to free and save survivors.
The Medicine Hat mechanics met at city hall with about fifty attendees and passed a resolution urging Mayor Hawthorne in Ottawa to secure government support for employing unemployed workers as they service soldiers and dependents of Canadian volunteers. The meeting praised patriotism and readiness to help. A Victoria Day program is planned at the Monarch on Monday.
Word from the Militia Department reports the Second and Third Brigades of the Canadian division engaged Thursday and Friday in an orchard fight with German forces. Canadians charged with bayonets, forced a German defense, and encountered machine guns in the melee.
