Single mothers seek longer hours to escape poverty says StatsCan

Statistics Canada reports in late 1995 that single mothers are far more likely to want longer work weeks. The survey of 19,143 workers found two thirds satisfied, but nearly 40 percent of single mothers would increase hours at the same wage, despite already long weeks.

Calgary approves test of traffic light advertising device

Calgary's transportation committee approved a test by Captive Imaging Ltd of a traffic light device that flashes safety and advertising messages to motorists stopped at red signals. Company president Mike Donovan says the system activates only on red, with safety messages like Buckle up and pedestrian crosswalk ahead appearing about 20 percent of the time.

Gustafsen Lake Trial Ends With Convictions and Cleared Defendants

In Surrey British Columbia a jury convicted William Ignace 65 of mischief endangering life and serious weapons charges tied to the Gustafsen Lake standoff. His son Joseph Ignace was cleared of all charges after a 1995 rifle-claim confrontation with police. The trial also found most co-defendants guilty of lesser mischief offenses.
