Statistics Canada reports in late 1995 that single mothers are far more likely to want longer work weeks. The survey of 19,143 workers found two thirds satisfied, but nearly 40 percent of single mothers would increase hours at the same wage, despite already long weeks.
Calgary's transportation committee approved a test by Captive Imaging Ltd of a traffic light device that flashes safety and advertising messages to motorists stopped at red signals. Company president Mike Donovan says the system activates only on red, with safety messages like Buckle up and pedestrian crosswalk ahead appearing about 20 percent of the time.
Natalie Oliphant, a cashier in Medicine Hat, says workers feel trapped as wage talks between Safeway and the United Food and Commercial Workers union stall. The union seeks higher pay and hours, while Safeway warns of financial strain and shifts profit sharing concerns. The eight week strike began March 26 with picketers pressing for an agreement and potential government mediation.
After 15 years of effort the city council in Medicine Hat votes unanimously for a 17 million leisure facility to serve soccer swimming hockey football and more. First stage plans include a pool rink fields and diamonds with future expansion and potential north side site near Crescent Heights High School.
In Surrey British Columbia a jury convicted William Ignace 65 of mischief endangering life and serious weapons charges tied to the Gustafsen Lake standoff. His son Joseph Ignace was cleared of all charges after a 1995 rifle-claim confrontation with police. The trial also found most co-defendants guilty of lesser mischief offenses.
In Calgary Jean Charest rejected claims of privilege and stressed equality after winning a Reform endorsement from Alberta Premier Ralph Klein. The campaign panel focused on national unity as Alexa McDonough accused Preston Manning of steering Canada toward civil war, while Manning invited Chretien and Charest to debate.
