An unidentified Finnish man armed with a pistol commandeered a Finnair passenger plane in Oulu before takeoff, holding five crew members as hostages. He released 95 passengers about 30 minutes later while police remained in radio contact with the crew.
Six Lebanese Muslim guards at the U S Embassy were abducted by unidentified gunmen at a crossing between west and east Beirut, held for eight hours and released. No group claimed responsibility and it was unclear which side they were crossing. only three of seven crossing points along the Green Line remained open.
Canada moves to temporarily recall its Ottawa ambassador Ted Lee to Pretoria for consultations after South African raids on three neighboring black ruled Commonwealth countries. Prime Minister Mulroney and External Affairs Minister Clark condemned the attacks as outrages and said further steps could follow. The raids targeting alleged ANC guerrilla sites in Zambia Botswana and Zimbabwe left several dead and sparked regional protests and global condemnation.
Winnipeg Manitoba energy minister Wilson Parasiuk announces he will resign from cabinet citing allegations of impropriety and conflict of interest. He calls for an independent inquiry to clear his name after a Winnipeg Free Press report tied a $40,081 Limestone project consulting contract to a former partner. Hydro officials say he had no direct dealings and learned of the contract after it was signed.
Oil futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange rose to 17.16 a barrel for June delivery, marking the first time above 17 since February. Analysts attribute the rally to heavy gasoline demand, tight crude supplies, market bullishness, and refinery buying cited by Merrill Lynch Energy Futures.
Saskatchewan Wheat Pool spokesman Gary Stevenson says the US Export Enhancement Program to boost barley sales to Saudi Arabia could cost Canadian farmers millions. Saudi Arabia buys about a quarter of Canada’s barley, while the US targets 500 000 tonnes and faces past failures in retaking markets. Canadian Wheat Board plans a June Vancouver meeting with five major exporting nations as prices adjust worldwide.
The worst forest fire week in New Brunswick history left millions in damage as 100 plus blazes raged across the Atlantic region. Fire crews battled 11 major fires, with nine under control and two still serious in New Brunswick while Newfoundland saw seven fires out of control. About 700 evacuated in Brown's Arm and Porterville, 5,000 more on alert later lifted. No deaths reported. 115,000 acres burned, largely due to human carelessness and arson. 27 camps and cottages destroyed and six houses. Kenneth Banks evacuated near Jagetown after a base firing incident sparked a blaze.
