Chinese crews returned from a 2500 mile non stop mission over western Japan. Leaflets urged Japanese people to oppose invasion of China. In Ottawa the C P R backed a transport bill transforming the railway board into a transport commission and extending control over rail air and some water transport.
London May 19 In the House of Commons Sir John Simon refused to issue a statement on the war debt to the United States. Labor members pressed for any demand from Washington and noted Britain had granted remissions to other powers beyond the U S. On May 11 Britain demanded Mexico pay an $84,000 instalment on indemnities linked to Mexican disorders after Mexico broke diplomatic relations.
Paris May 20 Edouard Bourdet director of La Comedie Francaise was wounded in the right arm by Henry Bernstein veteran play writer and duelist in an affair of honor that failed to end their quarrel. Bourdet's wound is not serious. The duelists used epees. The dispute was over rehearsing the Bernstein play.
CAPETOWN May 20 When South Africa's next Parliament meets Hertzog's government will have at least three fewer supporters than in the old parliament yet retain a majority of 72. Final tallies show Government 111 Nationalists 26 Dominion Party 8 Labor 3 Socialists 1 with one seat unreported.
Edmonton packing house managers praised Hien J. Gourdiner plan to supply the British market with fresh Canadian beef. They noted Western limits but expected indirect benefits from more feeder cattle finishing in the east. George Castle.
The first day of the Western group meeting concluded with a banquet and dance at the Gran gs in Medicine Hat. At a Medicine Hat Conservative Association executive meeting a condolence message was sent to Rt. Hon. R. B. Bennett on the death of his sister Mrs. W. D. Herridge. Bennett replied thanking the association for its sympathy.

An emergency flight by Pilot Don Farrell of Canadian Airways Ltd. rushed Captain James Williscroft 300 miles to Edmonton from McMurray today for medical attention after he became ill suddenly.
In Monton May 20 Hon Solon Law provincial treasurer said two per cent provincial securities tax payments are coming in steadily. By month end more payments are due to avoid penalties after June 1. The tax applies to principal of first second or third mortgages on land and is estimated to yield about $190 000 for 1938 fiscal year.
The Kinetic Club of Swift Current plans a Northern Saskatchewan carnival next month under the slogan A Swimming Pool for Swift Current. Originating two years ago, the group grew from twenty to eighty young men forming a social service club. They declined joining existing organizations, affiliate with the Junior Board of Trade, and collaborate with the Elwanians on the pool project. Dominion Day is chosen to kick off the festivities, hoping fun and funds will follow.
Richard Deans Waugh, aged 79, longtime Winnipeg figure and former British Empire representative on the Saar Commission in 1920, thrice mayor of Winnipeg and former chief commissioner of the Manitoba liquor commission, died today in Winnipeg.

France's Mediterranean fleet massed off Bizerta near Tunis with seven cruisers and eighteen destroyers in readiness for joint night exercises with the air force. The maneuver targets combined operations against potential aggressors in the region.
