A Montreal cable states the Cameronia brought the 24th Battalion Victoria Rifles to England safely. Lt. Col. J. A. Gunn leads the unit with a remount detachment, after a May 11 departure from Montreal amid large crowds bidding them God speed. Majors Hill and Alexander, ex-RCR, served at Halifax and Bermuda.
Ottawa on May 20 reports that seven hundred young men from across Canada have communicated their desire to enter the naval air service department.
Inspector G Connor cites private Crosby from the Tenth Battalion describing Maurice Clarke wounded in the second day of the Ypres fighting. Clarke was being transported by ambulance when it was hit by a shell and destroyed. Crosby notes Clarke anticipated his death and had warned the writer the day before.

London May 20 The cabinet crisis was sparked by Kitchener failing to inform ministers about ammunition supplies to the front. Shell volumes favored shrapnel over high explosives, inviting opposition calls for debate that could topple the government. A coalition cabinet was formed to avert a worse war crisis amid Admiralty tensions and Lord Fisher’s resignation.
The Lusitania sinking near Ireland spared Rev. Herbert J. Gwyer and Mrs. Gwyer, whose honeymoon voyage included Miss Louise Pavey, a Fort Qu Appelle governess who reportedly perished. Mrs. Gwyer narrowly escaped in a funnel and was rescued in Queenstown. The couple married April 15 at Regina. Gwyer had led Empress parish for a year, awaiting a post in England. Judge Hayes’s son Stuart Hayes was killed in France.
Premier Sifton announced that provincial bonds totaling two million dollars were sold to Spencer Trask and Co of New York at 95.44. The bonds, redeemable in ten years, carry 5 percent interest. One million goes to the Central Canadian Railway Company for road extension, one million for general provincial expenditures. May 20 Edmonton.
Two carloads of machinery for the three OVR Shell factories have arrived and are being installed. J E Davies reports a carload of steel billets from Nova Scotia steel works has been shipped and will arrive soon, enabling the Hat's large shell order to begin production.
Ottawa May 20 The Military Department formally authorizes seven new infantry battalions totaling about 8000 men and officers across the Dominion. Additional regiments will be formed in Eastern Ontario Kingston Toronto Winnipeg Alberta Manitoba Saskatchewan and a battalion for British Columbia.
In the House of Commons London May 20 a Unionist member asked if official data exist about Canadians in recent fighting being forced from a barn wounded men bayoneted by Germans and a sergeant nailed alive to a village cross after recapture. The under secretary said France’s authorities will send authentic atrocity details. no definitive information yet.
Redmond Roblin in Toronto recounts his side of the affair claiming he would have resigned earlier over the probe. Norris says the Toronto interview reflects the exact discussion between them and supports the published account.
