Police report a man who appeared drunk robbed a downtown Toronto convenience store at knifepoint, producing a 20 cm kitchen knife and escaping with cash in a plastic bag after dawn. He fled wearing white Adidas shorts pulled over his head. Nearby officers quipped the disguise was a normal sight in the area.
Betty Modin, 72 of Newbrook Alberta, freed on full parole after 16 months in jail for manslaughter in the 1981 death of Norman Modin. She maintained she did not shoot him and left his mummified body at a farm shed, with parole notes deeming her a minimal public danger.
Paul Teale 28 formerly Paul Bernardo faces first degree murder charges in the abductions and killings of Kristen French 15 and Leslie Mahaffy 14. Karla Homolka 22 is charged with two counts of manslaughter and released on bail. Police say other counts include unlawful confinement kidnapping aggravated sexual assault and indignity to a dead body.
Alberta's party leaders will dominate a media driven election from today through June 15. Ralph Klein will be pitched as a new style premier while Laurence Decore emphasizes ideas and Ray Martin focuses on policy. Analysts note Klein's pension move signals independence from the old guard.
