The parliaments of Soviet Estonia and Lithuania voted to seize control of budgets and industry, with Estonia planning a new koru currency. Lithuania followed with sovereignty measures and a pledge to resist Soviet laws, amid celebrations of the flag revival in Vilnius.
Premier Li Peng announced martial law in Beijing early Saturday to end a month of student pro democracy demonstrations that spread nationwide. The decree followed unrest during Gorbachev's China visit and came after the cabinet banned demonstrations at midnight. About 100,000 protesters remained in Tiananmen Square with talks on reform and free press sought. No immediate police surge observed. Three U.S. warships arrived in Shanghai amid the demonstrations.
Several major companies say they treat contributions to the free trade fight as business expenses and tax deductions. The Canadian Alliance for Trade and Job Opportunities says it received about 5.2 million dollars from firms and spent most on promotion of the US-Canada deal, including 2.1 million for advertising during last year’s federal election. Revenue Minister Otto Jelinek said deductions are allowed if firms prove the contributions aided their finances, while critics question the legitimacy of such deductions. Companies like Inco Ltd., Royal Bank of Canada, Noranda Inc., Texaco Canada, and Ford Motor Co. of Canada plan to claim the expenses.
The National Energy Board, led by Roland Priddle, launches a review of Canada's natural gas supplies amid fears of shortages. The assessment, aided by Shell Canada's David Collyer, aims to update reserves tracking and guide expansion proposals for U S pipelines, with results not made public.
MP Don Blenkarn told Harvie Andre Canada Post was ordered to start a formal investigation after Jan 23. He said gate agents feared speaking to internal investigators and had supplied rumors for years. Blenkarn claimed three cases had promised talks and triggered the probe.
The Senate ordered an RCMP inquiry into allegations that Senator Hazen Argue claimed travel expenses for trips not taken. The move followed a committee on internal economy recommendation. Argue’s staff directed inquiries to his lawyer, John Nelligan, as reporters sought comment.
U S Securities and Exchange Commission ruled two Arizona based firms owned by Donald Cormie and family violated 18 sections of U S investment law in a Los Angeles judgment. Sea Management and Sea Investors and chief operating officer Christa Petracca were found to have wilfully aided violations of the Investment Company Act and must hire an independent monitor for three years. The panel cited failure to maintain proper records incorrect net asset value calculations improper custodial arrangements and late reports after a 14 month probe.
