Lloyd to outline CCF plans today

Regina CP Premier Woodrow Lloyd of Saskatchewan is to hold a press conference to outline future CCF government plans after talks with Lieutenant Governor Hanbidge and Liberal Leader Thatcher. Lloyd will announce at 4 p.m. in his office as others defer comment.

NEWS wins top award in newspaper promotion contest

The NEWS advertising team led by Michael Bricker earned a first prize in the Editor and Publisher promotion contest for under 100 000 circulation papers. The campaign for Hat industries used cartoon booklets and four Hat themed symbols mailed to agencies from Victoria to Halifax. Medicine Hat city council commended the effort on April 15 1963. Ottawa Citizen and Montreal La Presse also earned honours.

Pioneer rancher Lance Brown dies at 69

Lancelot Charles Brown known as Lance Brown died suddenly at his Eagle Butte ranch while erecting a fence. He was 69. Born Oct 7 1894 on the family ranch, he led the farm with his father then took full control in 1925. He married Dorothy McKeen in 1925. He held key posts in Medicine Hat institutions and Calgary Stampede groups and was active in hunting, shooting, leather work, and various fraternal orders. Surviving are his wife, daughter Rosemary, four grandchildren, a sister, and two brothers. Funeral Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St Barnabas Anglican with interment Hillside Cemetery. arrangements by Cook's Funeral Chapel.

Never Swim Alone Ends With Heroic Rescue

An 11 year old Redcliff boy Harold Sween helped by a passing motorist after Wesley Lutz stepped on broken glass while swimming near the Trans Canada overpass between Medicine Hat and Redcliff. The motorist applied a tourniquet and rushed Lutz to hospital where surgery was performed at 5 p.m. Sunday to repair the injury.

UN says Makarios to free seven Turkish Cypriots

Reuters reports in Nicosia that UN spokesman said President Makarios promised to release at least seven Turkish Cypriots held by Greek Cypriots by tonight or Wednesday. The pledge comes amid ongoing Cyprus tensions and relief efforts.

Four charged with rape in city court

Four young men from the city faced rape charges before Magistrate H. W. D. Cox in city police court. The 17 year old local girl was the alleged victim. C. Mark Felesky 20 Danny Pender 19 Ivan Heid 19 Gordon Dorge 22 all appeared. Bail set at 1000 dollars each. The case adjourned to May 27 after no pleas were entered. They were held in city jail overnight.

Pearson Signals Liberal Unity on Flag Issue

Mr Pearson said every Liberal MP will vote according to conscience and that the party is practically unanimous. He planned to announce House procedure on the flag question and to fast track a resolution as priority legislation. He warned against personal or government responsibility for certain flag designs that appeared in a newspaper.

In Winnipeg on Monday Mr Pearson voiced a preference for blue bars on the flag. He spoke after rough treatment at the Royal Canadian Legion convention. He said the cabinet had debated the flag issue for the first time but would not pursue a Legion referendum.

Weekend violence hits Britain as Mods clash with Rockers

Britain faced a violent Pentecost weekend with 84 traffic deaths and about 200 teens arrested in Mod versus Rocker clashes along beaches from Clacton to Margate and Brighton. Police cracked down, with 40 plus detained at Bournemouth and 76 jailed in Brighton.

Violence Flare in Montreal as Victoria Day Protests Turned

Montreal youths clashed with separatists during Victoria Day weekend protests leading to 85 arrests. A homemade bomb was found on the Victoria Bridge after a tip and later tossed into the river. Elsewhere Canada enjoyed warm weather with 21-gun salutes and busy holiday events.
