Paris reports large scale fighting resumed on Verdun front with two fresh German divisions attacking French positions at Avecourt wood and Hill 304 west of the Meuse. Main attacks failed though a small post south of Vn 257 was briefly held by Germans.
A conference of provincial agents general in London, England, urged Canadian governments to deter officers and soldiers wives from coming to Britain during the war. They cited disruption to units, delayed leave, and wives contacting military authorities, urging families to stay in Canada where possible.
A Morning Post despatch from Amsterdam reports Berlin faces food shortages. Physicians of greater Berlin favor a uniform food supply regulation to protect public health. A committee plans to petition the Imperial Chancellor, with a meeting at the Prussian home office on Thursday to secure feeding provisions.
A despatch from Christiania says the employers union declares no general lockout and seventy seven thousand men are affected. The Norwegian cabinet met last night to discuss the situation.
Washington reports the House naval committee voted 13 to 8 to abandon the five year build plan and push for a 1917 program totaling about 250 million dollars. The crew of a Lowestoft fishing smack report a German submarine shelled their vessel near the harbor. A crew member was killed and two were injured as the submarine fired on the boat before the crew could launch their small craft.
