The son of rancher Reynan, about 14 miles east of Medicine Hat, was bitten on the leg by a large rattler Saturday evening. He was treated at hospital with the wound tied and whisky, then sent home Sunday morning with no further danger anticipated.
Ottawa dispatch reports Parliament debating judges travel costs tied to county-seat hearings. The Commons ruled an amendment to fund nonresident judges’ travel out of order, citing higher expenditures. Debates also cover dry dock subsidies and a Canada Northern railway plan, with warnings about Mackenzie and Mann and a bank theft noted in Montreal.
Ernest Thompson Seton, renowned naturalist and Chief Scout, spoke to Redcliff’s Men's Christian League at the Empress theatre. Mayor Bott lauded the lecture as a privilege for the town as Seton shared stories of boys, delinquency, and positive guidance with vivid demonstrations and crowd engagement.
After months of agitation the city council approved Alderman Boyd’s police plan. A $3500 patrol wagon and a small car for Chief Bruce will aid inspections and emergencies. Police funds from court costs will support rewards, relief, and recreation rooms. A new police station is proposed at $30,000, possibly trimmed to $25,000, with site selection referred to committee. The police magistrate salary rises to $150 monthly.
The Maple Leaf Co selects Archibald of Winnipeg to build the new Maple Leaf Mill. Mayor Brown and Superintendent Barker inspect the site as gas water and roads are rushed. Work is to start immediately with two hundred men in sixty days and grinding flour by January first. Archibald seeks local suppliers and contractors for hauling sand gravel and concrete work.

London reports the Alberta province loan subscription opened this morning and closed by noon. The fast uptake fills the entire issue and ends the list within half a day. Continuous coverage notes strong investor interest and quick market response.

W J Shannon Ogilvie Milling Company and Medicine Hat seek a missing acre once an optioned parcel near Seven Persons Creek. Disputed by Shannon who claims part belongs to him. government surveys support the claim. Council orders public works to form a search party, stake the area and report findings.
New York May 19 The Becker murder trial opens the defense promising more surprises. District Attorney Whitman completed his case against ex police lieutenant Herman Rosenthal’s killer yesterday afternoon. Becker's chief counsel Martin T Manton says the defense will call thirty witnesses, four of whom are new to the case. Becker's decision to testify had not been finally determined.
The Holland-Alberta Mortgage Bank, a million dollar company formed in Amsterdam, will deal in farm and building loans with Canadian offices in Medicine Hat and Calgary. Managing director S J Koning visited Medicine Hat nine months ago and again indicated plans to establish operations here. He said he would return in July to advance the project.
City invites sealed tenders for centrally located property suitable for a police station. Details appear elsewhere in this issue. Tenders close Saturday the 23rd.
Edmonton May 19 The condition of Mrs Bulyea wife of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta remains very serious. Three physicians Ferris Allin and Lailey were called last night but could not relieve her. She has suffered a general nervous breakdown with heart complications for about two weeks.
Forest fires devastated Alfred Michigan destroying homes and structures. Local authorities reported total loss across the village with residents displaced and firefighting units conducting containment efforts. No confirmed casualties announced pending inquiries.
Ex Constable John S Reid who aided Krafchenko escape and convict Hawkins died when a scaffold on a new tower at Stoney Mountain penitentiary collapsed. Both men were badly injured and died within hours. The incident prompted a request to the labor department to set up free employment bureaus nationwide.
Redcliff residents approved two by-laws with almost unanimous votes. One to authorize $75 000 for waterworks extensions and another for $16 000 to improve street lighting sidewalks and add to the fire hall. Five votes opposed the water by law and ten opposed the lighting measure.

Mr J T Ross Chief Inspector of Schools visits the city for several days to inspect German Lutheran schools amid concerns of language and religious instruction. He notes truancy laws apply if the schools lack department approval and that trustees may be held responsible for unqualified instruction. He commends progress as some schools have improved or closed to meet standards. He also reviews Supt Hay's kindergarten to primary grade linking plan to ease transitions for children.
Magistrate Rao declares sanitary inspectors are city representatives and must be admitted on premises. Gus Donner receives a one dollar fine plus costs for obstructing Inspector Whiteoak. Donners defense cites prior entry and right to enter, magistrate advocates pleasant duties. J Stennard and RM Nichol fined ten dollars each for intoxication while in charge. Nichol also pays five dollars for procuring liquor while interdicted.
City council moves to pass a bylaw requiring early closing hours on evenings before holidays after receiving a petition from the Retailers' Association. The measure follows the usual process and supports a standard citywide policy.
