The Le Dain commission proposed removing penalties for simple cannabis possession drawing praise from church health and medical groups while police and justice officials condemned it. Lethbridge police identify Peter Venhuis as the man whose body was recovered from the South Saskatchewan River near Lions Park. He was last seen in Lethbridge on April 27 beneath the High Level Bridge. His car was found near the bridge with keys on the dashboard and no inquest planned.
Union members ended nine days of unrest across Quebec and returned to their jobs after protests over the jailing of three labor leaders. Talks were expected to resume between government officials and 200,000 public service workers whose 11 day strike had been ended by back to work legislation.
The defence ministry said bombs were planted aboard the Queen Elizabeth 2 at sea and four bomb disposal experts were being flown to the mid Atlantic to deal with the threat.
Alberta lawmakers move the bill of rights to second reading and approval in principle. The six freedoms include liberty security equality before law and rights to religion speech assembly and press. A companion individual rights protection act seeks to curb discrimination and establish an Alberta human rights commission with an emphasis on education and negotiation.
The Commons gave third reading to veterans pension increases and sent the measure to the Senate. Government aims to have June cheques issued if Parliament passes by Friday. Senate leader Paul Martin sought a night sitting but was blocked by Conservative Jacques Flynn. Approval may come next Tuesday before the Victoria Day weekend.
