The Canadian section of Ford Motor Co says plants at Yalbotville Oakville Windsor and Niagara Falls may shut by week end if US rail stoppage persists, threatening 13 000 autoworkers. American Motors and General Motors Canada also assess impact while Chrysler halves shifts at Twinsburg Ohio plant. Canadian National Railways moves freight to trucks at the border.
In Ottawa the Trudeau government signs a pledge that the Canadian Wheat Board will not include flax rye or rapeseed without clear producer consent. Otto Lang opens the wheat board act amendment debate as MPs prepare to weigh emergency jobs measures with New Democrats pressing for a public marketing system.
Agriculture Minister H A Olson once resisted placing rye flaxseed and rapeseed under the Canadian Wheat Board. With Bill C 238 under debate in the Commons he appears to reconsider, after two years of opposition notes to John Skoberg.

City police report an unknown assailant attacked 79 year old Luigi Pacagnan at his 924 Dominion Street residence between 2 and 6 am Monday. The knife-wielding robber stole $100, struck Pacagnan on the head and cut his right ear. Police seek a about 30 year old suspect in an older suit coat. Call 527-2251 with information.
Ottawa reports indicate rising prices but Finance Minister Edgar Benson rejects wage and price controls. He told reporters and Liberal caucus that controls are unnecessary now, warning they would be dismissed as impractical. Inflation remains a concern with 0.7% April rise and unemployment at 659,000, while prices stay near a two percent annual rate.
