The Canadian Press reports 11 fatalities in the first 12 hours of the Victoria Day holiday, with eight deaths in Quebec from car crashes including two multi fatal accidents. Ontario saw two deaths, others none. Officials forecast 27 total highway deaths for the weekend, well below last year.
London AP says Danish sea captain Capt. J H Hansen on the Mary North reports hearing underwater knocking noises in the North Sea near The Netherlands. The Utrecht found nothing, the British admiralty doubts a submarine is missing, suggesting old wrecks or a plane marker buoy may explain the ping.
Oklahoma faced a third day of floods with heavy rains. The danger shifted east toward Tulsa and Keystone where record crests were forecast. Dozens evacuated as the Cimarron and Arkansas rivers rose, threatening farms and towns along the Arkansas River corridor.
Joyous rescuers pulled seven year old Benny Hooper from a 24 foot well in his backyard on Long Island after nearly 24 hours trapped. He was rushed to a hospital in good condition though shocked and exposed, with doctors watching for pneumonia.
The Medicine Hat News will not publish on Monday May 20 in observance of the Queen's Birthday. The next regular edition will appear Tuesday May 21 with full weekend event coverage.
Canadian Press reports from Regina that John Diefenbaker linked support for the South Saskatchewan River power and irrigation project with a plan for a Canadian energy board to keep power resources under national control. He urged no delay and criticized federal financing.
Britain detonated its first thermonuclear weapon near Christmas Island as Prime Minister Macmillan announced the test went to plan. He said fallout was almost negligible and Britain gains leverage in UN disarmament talks. The Suez issue and Haiti turmoil also dominate the week’s news.
Dr. H Bentley Glass argues that exposure to radiation from peaceful atomic energy may surpass fallout from testing and medical exposures. He warns about long lived fission byproducts, cancer and leukemia risks, and calls for a universal system to track individual radiation exposure.
In the June 10 federal race Coldwell urged a world-moving coalition of smaller powers to ban atomic and hydrogen tests by the United States Britain and Russia. He spoke on CBC radio while en route to Saskatoon to address a public meeting. Pearson called Canada’s stance satisfactory but warned any end to tests would need Soviet agreement on UN inspections. Diefenbaker proposed a Canadian energy board and backing for a South Saskatchewan River project as Laurant wrapped up Ontario tours.
Washington AP reports Harold E. Stassen notes near agreement on a first step toward disarmament. Negotiations with Soviet reps in London span nine weeks with Britain France and Canada involved. Plan contemplates mutual cuts in weapons manpower and defence spending plus aerial inspection of zones. Stassen sees progress but warns many issues remain unsettled and plans 10 days of consultations before May 27 London talks.
A three story building at 137 Pitt Street collapsed on the Lower East Side. Police feared people were buried in the rubble as firemen and officers dug by hand awaiting power tools. One man was rescued as gas fumes spread through the area.
At Taber Civic Auditorium a five-candidate rally drew about 40 listeners as opposition speakers attacked Liberal wheat policies and Trans-Canada Pipeline financing. Ray Klinck, Earl Smith, Ed Brunsden, H. A. Olson and Ald. John Starritt urged voters toward Conservative, CCF, and Social Credit platforms in the lead up to the June 10 election.
Alberta oil fields will meet about 50 percent of Canadian refinery requirements in June. Canadian crude supply from all sources is about 54 percent of total refiners use, with the rest from foreign imports. June demand is 22,937,443 barrels, of which 12,555,443 are produced in Canada and 11,770,740 from Alberta.
A brief exchange shows Young Spender asserting he earned his funds through hard work, while a friend doubts this, and a reference to lawyers suggests a dispute over wealth and inheritance. The dialogue hints at family wealth and personal effort and includes the line 86 it was.
