Ottawa May 17 Liberal A E McLean defended the government during a Commons budget debate. He praised tariff cuts on autos and postage, denied breaking pledges, and urged not to wage a tariff war with the United States. He favored completing Hudson Bay Railway to aid mineral trade and discussed regional impacts on Prince Edward Island. Col Cantley urged liquor duty cuts to curb smuggling, while a defence minister denial prompted a parliamentary exchange.
London May 18 India's only woman ruler Her Highness the Begum of Bhopal abdicates in favor of her son Nawal Zada Hamidulla. The British Government approved the succession ending eighty years of female rule in the small central Indian state of about 0,902 square miles with a population near 70000. The Begum governed with vigor and statesmanship for a quarter century.
London, May 18. The Prince of Wales caused a mild sensation by an unscheduled visit at Limehouse in the Metropolitan police station district. He appeared with Inspector Hall, spoke to officers, and praised their work. He had previously helped deliver milk in a poor London district during a strike.
The Sanity Commission postponed indefinitely its ruling on Russell Scott, the Chicago murderer who escaped three times, after completing today’s tests.

Edmonton May 17 Premier Brownlee returns from Ottawa saying a final natural resources settlement awaits the Alberta legislature. Cabinet meets as he reviews options and aims for amicable terms. He cites talks with Dominion and railway heads on Peace River roads and forthcoming federal aid, plus coal marketing actions.
Manila endures extreme heat with almost no rain for five months causing severe water shortage and drought conditions in the Philippines capital.
Ottawa reports Premier W L Mackenzie King and Rt Hon Arthur Meighen will not vote on the budget as they are paired due to Meighen’s illness. Conservative leader Bennett may follow King from the benches while Liberal members anticipate a Government majority of 10 or 11 with most absentees paired except Alfred Speakman who is in hospital.
Ottawa May 18 The customs inquiry heard officer B Balthasar testify that he passed goods without examination at Windsor station on orders from Montreal collector W S Weldon. He said he sometimes believed items were new and dutiable but followed the directives, keeping memoranda justifying clearances. The orders covered many items including a bulldog.
