A fire at Cleveland school house near Camden South Carolina killed 71 people and left two unaccounted for. The blaze started from an oil lamp explosion on stage during a closing entertainment. A narrow stair collapse caused many deaths as crowd rushed the single entrance.
May 18 Paris reports Andrew Bonar Law the British prime minister is in Paria for medical checks and talks. A London physician found no throat improvement, affecting his travel plans and signaling potential ministry changes after a conference with Lord Beaverbrook.
Shanghai reports negen bandits attacked Taw Enkow nine miles north of Lin Cheng seizing captives. A later note claims British and U S captives will be shot next Tuesday if Chinese troops are not withdrawn, per a bandit ultimatum delivered by Marcel Berube, a released prisoner.
An informal meeting of citizens supporting liquor government control was held in Calgary Chamber of Commerce offices last night. The executive committee appointed pro tem includes Wim. Cousins as chairman Martyn Oliver as secretary H E Tweed Chas Anderson and J W McLine. Wm Georgeson and R A Darker explained the liquor question note to be taken on November 5 next.
A cow that wandered from a pasture struck a Pere Marquette passenger train four miles from Sarnia Ont injuring engineer David Burwell and fireman Foster. The locomotive tender baggage car and one passenger coach left the rails but all passengers were only shaken. The cow was the only fatality.
Ronald Smith, a 17 year old, found guilty of manslaughter in the February 28 shooting of Ernest Lionel Orenz, a bank clerk, was sentenced to 15 years in the penitentiary by Justice Macdonald. Herbert Burton, aged 18, his companion in the crime, received six years for highway robbery with violence.
J P P OL Mecklejohn, postmaster at Limerick Saskatchewan, was committed for trial in a higher court on two charges of unlawfully opening postal letters after a preliminary hearing in Limerick. He was granted bail totaling 6,000 dollars with his own bond of 4,000 dollars and two sureties of 1,000 dollars each.
Lausanne May 18 The Turkish and Greek leaders Ismet Pasha and M Venizelos fail to settle reparations for Asia Minor despite talks and a plea to avoid formal sessions. Allies fret over potential breakdown as both sides demand large sums and call for arbitration.

Cardston May 27 The provincial summer school for scout leader training is likely to be held at Cardston in July. Most south of Lethbridge attend from the Calgary event last year. Scout commissioner Lee Ghehrist says attendance is definite and Ottawa authorities will place the school near the majority. A group of nine youths dragged nurse Claire Breslian from a sidewalk, battered her, and stripped her before police rescued her after a scream and window crash. Joseph Mc Shea 17 was arrested and named accomplices. Also reported is the death of Mrs. Mary Adela Latiner in Victoria at age 77 with six survivors.
