Russian army claims a decisive victory over Austrian forces in West Galicia, reporting 20 000 Austrians lost and a major reversal inflicted by czarist troops amid ongoing campaign reversals on the front.
A Russian official dispatch from Petrograd via Reuters reports the Austrian defeat in Bukowina was vast, with 20 000 prisoners abandoned and a 93 mile front. Czernowity fell and remnants retreat toward the Pruth as danger of disaster grows for Austria.
London reports a cabinet crisis amid a rift between Winston Churchill First Lord of the Admiralty and Lord Fisher Admiral of the Fleet. Lisbon via Paris May 1 Senator Freitas who yesterday shot and wounded Joas Chagas, president of the new cabinet, was slain at the railway station by a soldier who witnessed the attack. The soldier blocked an assault on Freitas by civilians. The assassin’s body lies on the platform awaiting his family. Freitas led the Senate attack against Alfonso Costa in the prior year. It is believed the bullet aimed at Costa struck Chagas.
Representatives of a fast growing western industry visited the city in search of a suitable site for a factory. After several days of ground review they departed for other destinations.
The Medicine Hat Boy Scouts held a farewell meeting at their barracks on 2nd St to honor Troop Master Rossiter now bound for the front. A fountain pen was presented with a tribute letter praising his service to Canada and the King, followed by a banquet and ice cream at Dawson's.
Winnipeg officials report a west mayors meeting on the 21st with western provinces representatives, then Ottawa to meet eastern mayors and present the unemployed question to Premier Borden. Over 60 locals have filed names, with a mix of nationalities and many laborers among the unemployed.
A civic farewell to the Third Mounted Fifles is set for tomorrow at 3 PM. Mayor Hawthorne arranged the event with Lieut. Col. Whitaker, with a parade downtown and a program at the ball park including the mayor’s farewell address on behalf of the city.

New York May 18 Germany will not deviate from its submarine warfare against Great Britain. He describes two bullet wounds in shoulder and hip, surgery performed, and improving condition under good care and food. He notes the 10th Batt and 16th Canadian Scottish supported advance and that letters are arriving after the big rush.
Field Marshall Sir John French reports that the first army advanced south of Richebourg Throue capturing German trenches along two miles. Several German troops surrendered voluntarily, with one group struck by German artillery and nearly annihilated. About 350 prisoners have been cleared to the lines of communication. No other incidents on the rest of the front.
The Court of Revision finished about one today after an extended run. It sat all day yesterday and again this morning. The hearing of appeals ended with J. F. Readings appeals this morning, then the board reviewed cases to decide who had a just claim to reduced assessments. It is unlikely that major reductions will be granted.
