Manning Calls June 3 Conference on Highway Safety

Premier Manning announces the second Edmonton conference on highway safety to discuss engineering laws enforcement and public action. Blairmore not headed to ghost town despite mine layoffs

In Blairmore Alberta a government official says the town will survive despite 250 miners being laid off when Greenhill mine closed. Logging lumbering and summer tourism are expected to keep Blairmore viable, according to John Ferguson of the provincial coal miners rehabilitation committee.

Toronto youth acquitted in fatal asphyxiation case

A 15-year-old boy was acquitted at a second trial on juvenile delinquency charges for the death of seven year old Wayne Mallette in Toronto. Wayne, from Seeley's Bay, was visiting with his parents when his body was found at the Canadian National Exhibition grounds. The death was ruled asphyxiation after he was choked. The youth had earlier been convicted and sent to a training school before escapes and transfers. The Ontario Supreme Court ordered a new trial after Peter Woodcock was found not guilty by reason of insanity in a separate murder case. Woodcock testified at the second trial.
