London reports tension over the Silesia revolt easing for the moment with limited crisis in entente laws. Diplomatic talks continue between London and Paris as Lloyd George and Briand likely to meet and confer early next week for a possible understanding.
Washington May 17 The receipt of 80 000 from Great Britain as the second instalment on the payment of 127 000 000 incurred through silver arched during the war was announced yesterday by the treasury. The amount received 13 200 000 was paid on the principal and 4 880 0 represented interest. On April 1st Great Britain paid the first instalment of 26 620 000 on the silver debt.
The first trolleyless storage battery electric railway car in Canada ran from Toronto to Belleville on the Canadian National line. For the next month it will operate hourly between Belleville and Trenton. Officials praised the demonstration as the cost per mile near six to seven cents versus about one dollar by steam.
The Canadian parliamentary committee meeting on ore coal supply in Canada featured non-appearance of Dominion Coal Company and Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Company leaders. N G Guthrie cited five firms as absent and officials debated a ruling on costs of coal production and witness questioning. The chair threatened to resign amid motions and refusals to feature the measure.
The Chief of Police urges car owners to lock their vehicles and remove keys when left on streets, especially at night, due to a rise in thefts nationwide. The message warns that open country trails now offer easy opportunities to steal cars.
Mr John Benson, noted potato grower, has received samples of Sharp's Express, Cutter's Early Favorite, Irish Cobblers, and Bove. The seed potatoes were sent by R Noel Hammond Limited, Edmonton, to gauge earliness and cropping quality in the district.
Ottawa reports for the week ending May 6, 1921 that grain in store at public elevators declined: wheat down 2,598,994 bushels, oats 1,905,194, barley 245,347, flax up 12,343, rye up 112,221. Western elevators show wheat down 566,?52 bushels, oats 1,009,197, barley 116,929, flax 9,220. interior terminals: wheat down 160,699. oats 152,662. barley 6,442. flax 30.
Winnipeg May 17 reports from 229 prairie points indicate crop conditions overall very satisfactory though season is later than last year. The Heralds fourth weekly crop report covers Southern Alberta with wheat seeding winding up, reduced acreage, moisture each week, and enough moisture to carry crops to early June.

Officers of the old German army staged a monarchist demonstration during the funeral of the former Kaiserin of Potsdam. Von Hindenburg received a great ovation as he entered his car. A hearse bore the former empress Note, with ex-Kaiser sons acting as pallbearers, while officers in imperial uniforms formed part of the procession.

London reports the Lancashire miners' representative James McGuirk urging the Miners Federation to consider dropping the demand for a national coal profits pool. Robert Smillie remains influential, advocating a fair way out as the strike risks continuing past Christmas. Efforts to stop continental workers from handling English coal have failed.
Chicago May 17 Nine members of the IWW including Big Hill Haywood did not return to Leavenworth to finish their sentences for violations of the Espionage Act leading to the forfeiture of bonds totaling 80000. A report from IWW circles says Haywood plans to return to the United States from Russia where he is allegedly staying.
Mr. J. W. Weight announced that unemployed married pensioners who had pensions committed and received relief will again be considered eligible. The relief is expected to continue only through May and may not be extended beyond that month.
Brandon reports the death of Black Cap McGregor a four year old bull owned by J D McGregor. The animal had won shows across Western Canada as a yearling and two year old and was offered ten thousand dollars at age two. It was grand champion at Brandon Saskatoon and Regina shows last year.
Rome reports forty deaths from clashes between factions on Italy's Sunday general elections. Disorders occurred in Pisa province, Novara, and Parma with eight killed. Socialists, Catholics, and supporters of ex premier Nitti suffer losses in seats as returns indicate shifts toward the constitutional bloc.
The past twenty four hours have been generally fair and moderately warm across the west with light to moderate cloudiness in Vancouver and Winnipeg. Forecast calls for fair weather today and Wednesday with slightly warmer temperatures, including Calgary Medicine Hat and Saskatoon with clear skies and mild conditions.

A meeting of supporters of Col. Spencer’s by election bid will be held tonight at S o'clock in the National Liberal Conservative party rooms in the Marshall block on Third Street.
