The Israeli Knesset and Lebanon's parliament endorsed the U S mediated plan for Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon amid Syrian objections. Israel and Lebanon must see Syria and the PLO pull back before the pact takes effect. Syrian FM Khaddam said the agreement will not pass or be implemented regardless of regional changes.
C Channel battles for survival as 80 hours of free programming run on the Cablevision system across 250 stations. In Toronto officials say the weekend blitz drew hopes of new financing but fell short of the 25 000 subscription goal and faces a dark grey outlook.
A Southam News Global Television poll of 530 delegates taken May 10 13 shows Joe Clark leading the Progressive Conservative race with 35 percent of first ballot support while Brian Mulroney trails at 19 percent. John Crosbie is third at 14 percent with Michael Wilson and David Crombie next, Peter Pocklington and John Gamble bringing up the rear.
Prime Minister Trudeau in Jasper meets Western farm leaders to discuss ending the 86 year old Crow rate. The bill would raise the rate to twice current by 1986 and five times by 1991 with a $651 million annual subsidy from the federal government. Leaders say Trudeau listened and may amend the bill.
Carleton University poll for Southam News and Global Television surveys 530 potential delegates. Respondents favor anyone opposing John Gamble and mock Peter Pocklington, Colin Kerr and Neil Fraser, while expressing strong ABC attitudes toward Joe Clark and Crosbie and warning Mulroney would derail the party.
