Edmonton CP report says the Alberta Cabinet will let hotels drop supper-hour closing of beer parlors. New regs allow hotel beverage rooms to serve beer for any 11 hour window between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. with hours chosen by hotel operators pending Alberta Liquor Control Board approval.
Robert Stanfield labeled Prime Minister Trudeau as divisive over Quebec demands during a Cape Breton rally in New Waterford, faulting his approach as risks to Confederation. The Conservative leader urged unity and responsibility, defending Faribault and Johnson while highlighting regional issues. Stanfield also announced a June 25 nomination in Cape Breton East Richmond.
More than 30 tornadoes hit from Kansas to Ohio as daylight revealed 48 dead in Arkansas and dozens more in Iowa Illinois Missouri and Indiana. Jonesboro suffered 33 dead and 350 injured while Oil Trough Mountain Home and Tuckerman reported fatalities. National Guard deployed and aid rushed to Iowa and Arkansas as storms caused widespread destruction.

Nearly 200 homes damaged, communications cut, and transport disrupted. The 7.8 magnitude quake trails only the 1923 Kanto disaster in history.
Six coal miners trapped for almost ten days in a flooded hominy Falls shaft were rescued and found in good shape while four others died. A dozen others were saved or found earlier as rescuers followed mud tracks to the underground prison and led the six to a battery car and exit. They had rationed sandwiches and drank the floodwaters as officials described the dramatic recovery and medical checks at Richwood hospital.
