Tigers and city squabble over new rink lease terms

Medicine Hat officials say the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers cannot expect the same rental deal at the 75 million Event Centre as at the 45 year old arena. Councillors push for a lease in place before opening and warn of a poor deal if private operator SMG Canada negotiates. The city estimates arena losses have averaged 300 thousand dollars annually while the new centre aims to be self sustaining.

Downtown patio sparks buzz and debate in city

A temporary sidewalk patio in front of Local Eatery on Third Street SE draws mixed opinions. Supporters praise it as a downtown draw while critics worry about access, parking, and permit processes. The plan, costing about 20000, was approved by Municipal Works. Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission will inspect Friday. Local officials stress safety and no special treatment. Wayne Smith of the CCDA backs more patios downtown.
