Canada’s wireless sector nears parity with fixed lines as 18 million wireless subscribers at year end 2006 rival 18 million fixed access lines. Cable telephony adds 740,000 subscribers. Wireless profits surged 67 percent to 1 billion in Q4 2006, while wireline profits fell 24 percent to 675 million and revenue slipped 1.5 percent to 5.6 billion. Wireless revenue rose 16.2 percent to 3.4 billion, with overall wireless profits up 4 billion and wireline earnings down 14 percent to 3.5 billion despite 10 billion in extra revenues.
Chris Breen uses a set of wheels to move his red canoe from home to the Kennebecasis River for an evening paddle in Saint John New Brunswick. His route passes the Irving Blue Canoe gas and convenience store on Millidgeville Avenue as he travels Monday.
Calgary and Red Deer Emergency Response Teams assisted Brooks RCMP in a dawn search warrant at a Brooks residence in the 200 Block of Third Street 5.E. They seized cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana and cash. a 20 year old male from Brooks was arrested and charges are pending. Police seek tips at 403-362-5548 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Brooks RCMP seek tips about a string of vandalism cases including damage to cars at Honda Magic Sales Lot and seven other incidents. Over the weekend six vehicles were damaged in other city areas with smashed windows and a pick axe used in one case. A fence was also damaged. police urge tips to Brooks Detachment.
Saskatchewan unveiled its initial Report on Saskatchewan's Provincial Forests to begin regular, progressive forest state accounting. The document introduces 22 indicators under the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers framework and sets the path toward a full State of the Provincial Forests Report due in 2009, with online access via the provincial government site.
Saskatchewan auditor Fred Wendel praised a culture of fraud awareness among civil servants but cited two Department of Corrections cases where over 30000 in inmate trust money disappeared due to missing checks. He also urged tighter oversight of the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations though no funds were found missing.
Alberta health and safety stats show 124 occupational fatalities in 2006 a drop from 143 in 2005. The breakdown includes 33 motor vehicle incidents 27 workplace incidents and 64 disease deaths. The fatality rate fell to 78 per million person years the lowest since 1991. Lost-time claims rate was 2.35 per 100 person years down from 2.41. In Montréal the World Taekwondo Federation refused to recognize hijab accommodations for Muslim women in sanctioned competitions. The decision follows two bans in Longueuil and states no religious exemptions will be allowed. The federation is IOC recognized and the largest body in taekwondo.
Graeme Bell, 25, a Winnipeg Blue Bombers receiver and special teams player, intervened to stop a man with a baseball bat from attacking others outside a Saskatoon restaurant. Bell was struck twice in the head, severely injuring him, while three other men were also hospitalized. Police praised his actions as a good deed beyond his athletic role.

The Hamas Fatah unity government remained unable to stop the chaos as residents hide indoors and security checkpoints tighten. Meanwhile in Brussels EU defense ministers called for tactics to curb civilian casualties in Afghanistan amid reports of high noncombatant deaths tied to American operations.
