OTTAWA CP The Bank of Canada rate fell for the third straight week dipping 13 basis points to 8.59 per cent from 8.72 per cent last week.
In Vancouver a crime reenactment turned real as two Crimestoppers actors filming on Robson Street were followed by a police surveillance unit. Det. Steve Fudge said the team then assisted in arresting three men awaiting charges.
RCMP accuse Conservative MP Michel Gravel of 50 counts including bribery and breach of trust for allegedly taking cash and benefits from government contractors. Charges cite payments up to 30,000 and a 5,000 kitchen package. Gravel’s lawyer says he will plead not guilty.
Prime Minister Brian Mulroney wrapped up a 13 day Far East tour aimed at boosting trade and human rights. Reporters fixated on Industry Minister Sinclair Stevens resignation and MP Robert Toupin leaving Conservative ranks, while Mulroney urged human rights in South Korea and a reduced Canadian trade deficit with China and Japan.
Officials say a April 10 Mighty Oak blast left dangerous radiation in tunnels at the Nevada Test Site 105 kilometers northwest of Las Vegas. Access remains barred for weeks or months while investigators determine the failure cause. Two workers had slight radiation exposure, but no health risk. The blast cost $70 million.
City officials credit an early 20th century decision to keep a local power system for Medicine Hat’s electricity as surrounding areas face extended outages. While Lethbridge and rural districts struggle with downed lines, Medicine Hat reports power today after separating from the provincial grid to avoid a wider collapse.
An Angus Reid poll for the Edmonton Journal shows Albertans score Prime Minister Mulroney higher than the national average for honesty in government. Albertans also lean toward Stevens resigning over his conflict of interest scandal, with views shifting after his departure.
