Penitentiary escape plot warned before Laval breakout
Federal penitentiary officials were warned April 25 that prisoners in St. Vincent de Paul unit plotted to escape. Five inmates, including murderer Jean Paul Mercier, had just escaped Laval penitentiary after walls were breached. A Quebec police inquiry was announced to probe penitentiary security amid a province wide escape hunt and prior breaches at Cowansville.
