In Calgary a crib fire was averted when Dawn-Eye Antaya removed seven month old Brian for feeding at 5:54 a.m. The crib near a hot plate burst into flames, hospitals report no injuries. A second Calgary item notes a gas tank car incident where an eight year old boy Jimmy Watt was rescued with help from a motorist and cabbie after fumes filled the car.

Census aims to map Canada’s farm changes since 1951

Census chief Dave Broadfoot announces the 1956 all-Canada census will gather farm data to measure shifts in field crops across the Dominion. Enumerators will visit farmers, with advance schedules mailed, to create a new benchmark for annual statistics.

Liberal majority closes debate on pipeline vote

The Commons passed a government closure motion 122 to 73 to end debate on the cross Canada natural gas pipeline loan. Trade Minister Howe led the measure amid opposition jeers as Liberals used the weapon for the first time in 24 years. St Laurent voted in favor.

Two Killed In Explosion In Oak Ridge

The second of three men injured in a Monday explosion in Oak Ridge died today. I Lyons 27 and W R Stooksbury 27 died of extensive burns and other injuries. G R Myers 26 remained in critical condition with the loss of an arm. AEC said the blast originated in a scrap heap of zirconium oxide and zirconium. the atomic plant was not damaged.

Medicine Hat Health Unit Reports Restaurant Dishwashing Progress

The Medicine Hat Health Unit releases a quarterly report noting improvements in restaurant dishwashing and hygiene in Brooks Redcliff and Bow Island. A second round of swab testing will grade establishments A for Good B for Fair and C for Poor based on dishwashing practices with results posted publicly.

Nine Die In Crash Near Louisville Indiana

A twin-engine Lockheed plane owned by Crane Plumbing Co of Chicago crashed in a rainstorm on an Indiana farm near Jeffersonville across the Ohio River from Louisville. Nine executives were killed as the craft nosed into a muddy field in a 45 degree angle, with wreckage spread over about 100 yards. Police recovered all nine bodies from the semi swamp site.

City expands Kingston subdivision as half of lots bought

City controller Tommy Legge reports that just over half of the 120 Kingston building lots have been purchased. More lots may be sold soon as residents show interest but have not yet acted. By Monday close, over 60 lots were paid for. The area was initially fully booked after a Brown and Hogg survey, but many options lapsed before the deadline. If no construction starts within six months, purchased lots revert to the city. Local opinion blames aggressive brokers and a 900 square foot minimum. Santee’s Amateur Status Upheld by New York Supreme Court

New York AP reports Justice Walter A. Lynch upheld the lifetime suspension on Wes Santee by the AAU for professionalism. Alberta Safety Council reports drop in fatalities

The Alberta Safety Council released figures showing 44 road deaths to end of April, down from 65 last year. April fatalities were ten, down from 21 in 1955, while injuries fell to 991 from 1,083. Car Collision Takes 3 Lives in Alberta Highway Crash

Calgary police report a head on crash on No 2 highway 22 miles south of the city killed three people and left Dorothy Papp 37 hospitalized in serious condition with a fractured arm and head injuries. The dead include W J Elliston 71 of Parkland Alberta and his 70 year old wife Edith Jessie and an RCAF Station Claresholm aircraftman unnamed.
