Moscow broadcasts on the radio led to imprisonment for former German Communist party members in terms from two to six years. The court convicted them of high treason for gathering in small groups to listen to Moscow broadcasts. The case highlights postwar tensions and radio influence on dissent.
Dr Hugh Eckener, master of zeppelins, surveyed the wreckage of the Hindenburg at Lakehurst New Jersey. He viewed motion pictures and photos of the May 6 flame disaster in which 35 people died.

Francisco Largo Caballero resigned as premier of Spain and was asked by President Manuel Azana to form a new cabinet. He plans a government with the same orientation but more party based than union driven, amid tensions in Catalonia involving moderates and proletarian extremists.
Complete sellout at the two and a half hour performance by Marjorie Colter and 97 pupils with 41 acts. Spectators praised variety from humorous to elaborate costume numbers. Colter and her pupils received loud applause and the revue was marked by polish and vivacity.
BAYONNE May 15 The insurgent cruiser Almirante Cervera supported General Emil Mola's troops shelling Mount Sollube as Basque defense troops blocked the way to Munguia seven miles northeast of Bilbao. A fierce battle faded from the peak with insurgents charging Government lines but failing to dislodge Basque militiamen. Reports indicate insurgents withdrew with substantial losses.
May 15 Milton Ontario area reports an auto accident that killed four school children and injured others. The car carrying Nilston youths collided with a Montreal bound train two miles south of Milton. Victims named include René Larochelle 11 and Howard 13 along with Earl Murray 10 and Earl Fuller 14. Driver John C. Vashelir 37.
Fires believed started by arson threaten homesteads and communities south of Edmonton, Alberta. A three mile front burns near Prairie Creek, with several new blazes ignited yesterday afternoon. Hardinelle school, two miles west, closed since Tuesday as residents brace for spread.
Calgary reports describe an all night rainstorm in southern Alberta with .66 inches measured marking the best rainfall since last June. The heaviest fall hit Medicine Hat and surrounding districts with rain extending toward Calgary and Lethbridge after early morning clouds moved out to reveal sunshine. Agricultural officials say crops damaged by wind will recover as rain spurs germination and renewed growth in grains and pasture.
London May 15 Viscount Snowden former Chancellor of the Exchequer died suddenly of a heart attack at his Tilford Surrey home aged 72 His widow Viscountess Snowden reported he had been ill but not critically so prior to the coronation day and had attended a state ball at Buckingham Palace during his absence in ill health Snowden led the Exchequer during the 1931 financial crisis and introduced the bill suspending the gold standard on September 21 1931.
K. H. Harris was charged at the RGM P court for theft of a revolver from Robert Brehmer of Bowell. He received 60 days imprisonment after prosecutors alleged he pocketed the weapon during a visit to the Brehmer home and later sold it in Medicine Hat.
Continental Can Company of Canada plans a 400000 dollar plant and equipment investment at St Laurent. Saint John reports April export cargoes up 33 percent. Waterloo sees 24 percent rise in current tax collections. Pacific Mills lines up 200000 dollar warehouse at Ocean Falls. La Tuque pulp mill expansion with 83000 reservoir for acids. Dominion Steel adds a 70000 dollar electric furnace in Sydney. George Weston and William Paterson workers get a 5 percent wage rise. Port Royal Pulp and Paper announces a 10 percent wage increase at Fairville plant.
The President's report shows total registration of 2069 for the current year, up 26 students from 1935-36. By faculty: Arts and Sciences 783, Applied Science 277, Agriculture 71, short course in Agriculture 22, Law 38, Medicine 272, Dentistry 75, Nursing 113, Pharmacy 54, Education 31, Summer Session 336, graduate 93. The Summer Session rose 59. The Education School advanced from 22 to 38, and Calgary courses may ease accommodation. The province's population relation to enrollment sits around one third to two fifths of one percent. The 1937 autumn term will open with senior matriculation. Grade XI entrance is being phased out.
Fairbanks Alaska May 15 Rising river waters flood about half the population forcing many to flee their homes. Water depths reach up to three feet as residents use rowboats and canoes to access properties. Private firms estimate damage between 200000 and 400000 dollars.
Otto C. Ernst a cotton broker aged 78 died today at Paul Kimball hospital Lakewood. The Hindenburg disaster toll rose to thirty six with his death, marking another victim confirmed in the event narrative.
In London on May 15, busmen overwhelmingly voted 17 459 to 1 776 to resume work. At a Transport House meeting union leaders announced the vote after a two week strike. Bus crews cast ballots in city garages across the suburbs to decide if a court of inquiry report offered a sufficient basis to return.
A Legion smoker and celebration of the local branch's twentieth anniversary was held at the Legion hall last night. Past Presidents J. Bruce, J. Wright and H. Baker reviewed the branch history since its May 12, 1917 founding, with G.W.V.A. speakers discussing name changes to the Canadian Legion in 1926 and noting activities. Cy. Meya, J. E. Hailworth, Thompsob and accompanist Thompsob added a humorous musical tone as President H. Weightman presided.
The Ever Ready Orators held a successful banquet at a Ceilg hotel with about fifty members, parents and friends present. President Don Gow Vice-president Archie Toole and Secretary Lorne Crysler led the event credit for the splendid program and toast to the institution’s progress since 1902. J T Cuyler received a presentation for untiring service. the program included many named speakers and topics.
