Ottawa dispatch reports the three day CPR firemen strike ends with a pact to retain 175 lower seniority firemen for about 17 years and to hire no new firemen. Regular service resumes across the system though some delays and local picket lines remain, with crews returning to duty and supervisors preparing to revert to full staffing.
Calgary welder Nick Krisa testified that two Medicine Hat men accused the Jenner project of favoring Americans over Canadians. He said he applied for Jenner welding jobs, was told he failed a test without specifics, and noted six Americans passed the test while ten Canadians failed. The Alberta Gas Trunk Line project by Fulton Banister covers 25 miles of 26 inch pipe and 50 miles of 34 inch pipe. Rod and Pat Bruce of Medicine Hat raised the bias claim earlier. Krisa added he was told jobs were filled by Americans when he inquired about seven prior welding postings.

The strike involved threats and an assault on 63 year old engineer Lee White, with some trains consolidated and crews temporarily lacking firemen. Lodge president Keith Wellband praised the public’s support and the orderly conduct of picketers.
