UNBELIEVABLE FURY describes the fighting in Northern France where both sides show exhaustion yet the Allies maintain strong positions. French and British forces press operations as air and ground assaults continue.
Despatches from Rome report strong war demonstrations and expect grave events soon. King Victor Emmanuel has not confirmed acceptance or rejection of the cabinet resignation tendered last night. Allied notes say Gallipoli fighting continues with no decisive phase reached.
Ottawa reports casualties from the Langhmarey engagement at the end of April. Total killed, wounded and missing rise to 5,616 with officers at 764 and other ranks at 4,852. Missing include 5 officers and 403 men, with heavy losses among the Third and Vth Montreal and the 15th Highlanders Toronto. Identification tags may be withheld from German lines.
May reports say a German Zeppelin raid aimed at Paris yesterday failed. One airship reached La Ferte in the Aisne department about 11 miles from Paris before fleeing when a French aerial squadron appeared. News of the approach was telegraphed from the front, prompting defensive preparations.
The Daughters of the Empire announce a Grand Flag Day tomorrow. Flags of the Allies will be sold and 2000 carnations, a gift from the Hoserles, will be available. All residents are urged to help the soldiers fund and city needy.
