Charlie Herzog aged 16 drowned after overbalancing in a canoe on the river near Whitemouth Manitoba yesterday afternoon. The youth fell overboard and could not be recovered.
A.C. Tagge of Montreal arrives in Medicine Hat to finalize plans for a cement mill joint venture by the Hunt Engineering Co and Canada Cement Co. The project aims for 4000 barrels of cement daily, with 700 workers during construction and 300 to 500 employed in production, plus substantial rail traffic. The work is to proceed immediately and be completed at the earliest date.
At a Presbytery meeting with Rev. Wm. Shearer as moderator a lengthy letter from Dr. Mc Queen was read about cemetery property recently sold. The property was held in the name of the Presbyterian churches of Medicine Hat, not St. John’s congregation. Legal questions arise over transfer method. decision postponed to a Calgary meeting at end of July.

In Irvine area a local butcher faced a breach of market law charge after buying a calf carcass from a farmer. Evidence showed the farmer sought veal pricing at the store but was told to wait after visiting the market. Delivery and payment occurred at the defendant’s shop. The case was adjourned for another week to allow witnesses and defense preparation.

The blasts bent tracks and scattered cross-ties along about 800 feet of the 4 mile railroad owned mainly by the Empire Steel and Tron Co, which has faced a two month strike.

In Havana on May 14 1500 sailors and warehousemen walked out for higher wages halting the tobacco business in Havana and nearby towns tied to the 1913 crop. Tobacco merchants foresee a four to five day resolution and a committee is set to negotiate with strikers. The first installment of a Chinese loan of 125 million dollars totaling 1.2 million has been paid bearing 6 percent interest and to be offered at 90.

He then rescued his 8 year old brother from Bogue creek. The elder son allegedly fired first as they reached for weapons, and the younger child drowned during the struggle.

Boston May 14 The board of commissioners for American missions reports American missionaries Rev Phineas Kennedy and Mrs Kennedy expelled from Kortchan southern Albania by Greek authorities and now in Saloniki Kennedy led a school for Albanian girls and aided distressed residents while guards and listing of visitors raised suspicion. In another item Nanaimo May 14 Henry Wagner sentenced to be hanged August 28 for the murder of Constable Westaway at Union May 4 after robbing a grocery store. Wagner has a long criminal record.
In Ottawa May 14 Premier Horden announced a forthcoming supplementary estimate including a grant to Captain Scott’s family. Hon. Rudolph Lemieux had urged government aid, while Hon. Jacques Bureau questioned a Col. Sam Hughes speech attribution. The House debated lifting the three dollar per acre preemption fee as part of the revised annuity.
London dispatch says a proposed plan by suffragettes aimed to kidnap a cabinet minister. The scheme involved luring him to a country house, dressing him in old woman’s clothes, handcuffing him, and staging a mock trial with a suffragette judge and jury. The plan was not executed as details leaked to others.
