Man acquitted couple in toddler’s methadone death
A court acquitted Lisa Guerin and Jonathan Lope of manslaughter and criminal negligence in the 2008 death of their 16 month old daughter Suramar Hope in Apel. The judge noted common sense requires avoiding any possible poisoning risk. Hope admitted taking his daily methadone dose at a clinic and bringing a portion home in a coffee cup. He placed the cup in a bedroom and kept the door closed, exposing the child to the drug’s effects. Doctors testified even a trace amount could be lethal to a toddler. The verdict says neither parent ensured the cup’s safety despite knowledge of the risk.
