Canada and 23 western countries reached a pact under OECD to stop dumping subsidized surplus food on world markets and halt paying farmers to boost production. The communique offers no timetable or penalties, leaving its effectiveness uncertain after two days of talks. Officials worked through the night to draft the statement.

PTL Paid Bush Aide For Public Relations

The PTL ministry paid former press secretary Peter Teeley $120,000 over 18 months for public relations in Washington. The Washington Post reports the PTL board ended Teeley’s relationship after new board members joined following founder Jim Bakker’s admission of a sexual encounter with a former secretary. Teeley, Bush’s press secretary until 1984, is a Washington consultant.

NDP Surges to First in National Poll

The New Democrats lead the Liberals 37 to 36 per cent in an Angus Reid national poll for Southam News, with the Conservatives at 25 per cent. The survey of 1,677 adults, conducted over five days, shows federal race tightening and Quebec favoring the NDP at 48 per cent.

Dome signs takeover deal with Amoco Canada unit

Dome Petroleum Ltd. seals a final agreement with Amoco Canada Petroleum Co. to sell Dome for about 5.1 billion dollars. The deal requires approvals from federal authorities, creditors, and shareholders before Amoco takes possession, with secured lenders expected to receive about 85 cents per dollar and unsecured creditors around 35 percent.
